Add a room, a sub-room, and what a sub-room changes
Step: Rooms (step 3 of 7). Screen guide: Rooms.
Add a room
- Go to the Rooms step.
- On the floor you want, press + Add room. A box Add rooms to <floor> opens.
- If you want more than one room of the same kind, set the number next to Add … × (1 to 20) first.
- Press the picture of the room kind, for example Bedroom.
- One room is named after the picture (Bedroom).
- If that name is already used, or you add several, they are numbered after the ones already there (Bedroom 1, Bedroom 2…).
- Click the new room's name and type the name the owner uses, for example Master Bedroom. Every room needs its own name; two rooms with the same name turn the second box red and switch off Save & Deploy until one is renamed.
- Use the Who can use chip to choose who may use the room. Admins always have every room. Guest is separate and is not part of Everyone.
The new room has no devices yet, so its row says Needs attention: no devices yet. Click the room's summary line to open it in Room Devices and add its devices.
To add a floor first, press + Add floor under the last floor and rename Floor N.
Make a room a sub-room
A sub-room is a room that belongs inside a main room, for example a dressing room or a bathroom inside a bedroom.
- Make the room as above, on the same floor as its main room.
- In the room's row press ⋯ (More).
- Under Make a sub-room of…, press the main room.
The row now shows a small tag Inside: <main room> under its name, and the list puts it straight under its main room. Only main rooms with a name on the same floor are offered.
To undo it, press ⋯ on the sub-room and choose Make a room.
The same choice is also in Room Devices, in the room's header (Under <room>).
What a sub-room changes
In the app (after the next Save & Deploy):
- A main room is drawn as a full-width gold tile. A sub-room is drawn as a half-width dark tile.
- On the phone, and on an iPad held upright, each sub-room comes after its own main room.
- On an iPad held sideways, sub-rooms sit under their main room in its own column, two to a row.
- A sub-room keeps its own devices, its own scenes and its own who can use ticks. Being a sub-room does not give its people the main room, or the other way round.
In the house: the sub-room's devices are controlled exactly as any room's. The configurator writes the main room's name next to the sub-room in the files the app reads, and it is listed as sub of <room> in the Join Map. The hub does not use the link.
Things to watch:
- Deleting a main room that has sub-rooms: the Delete <room>? box lists them under Its sub-rooms and gives two buttons. Move them up to the floor makes each one a main room. Delete them too deletes them as well. Cancel keeps everything.
- A sub-room cannot be put under a room on another floor.
- Hiding a main room with its eye button does not hide its sub-rooms; each room has its own eye.
