KNX naming rules
Where: in ETS, before Device Import → KNX
The import reads each group address name and finds three things: the room, the kind of device, and the function (on/off, status, up/down …).
The shape of a good name
Floor · Room · Device · Kind · Function
Example: FLG Guest Bed Front Sheer Up/Down
FLG— the floor's short form.Guest Bed— the room, exactly as in the Rooms step.Front— the device.Sheer— the kind.- — the function.
A kind word anywhere in the name sets the curtain kind: Main, Sheer, Blackout, Blind.
_ and - read as spaces: FLG_Guest-Bed_Sheer = FLG Guest Bed Sheer.
Rule 1 — name it Floor · Room · Device · Kind · Function
- Start with the floor and room. Every word of the room must be there.
- Put a type word anywhere:
Light,Curtain,Blind,Shutter(and plurals). - Put a kind word anywhere: Main, Sheer, Blackout, Blind. It sets the curtain kind.
- Example:
FLG Guest Bed Front Sheer Up/Down→ room Guest Bed, device Front Sheer, kind Sheer. The kind word stays in the name, so Front Main and Front Sheer stay two curtains.
Rule 2 — the room must match a room of this home
- Every word of the room name must be in the name. Case and signs do not matter.
- Extra words (like the floor code) are fine.
- If two rooms match, the one with more words wins. (
Guest Bedwins overBed.) - If two rooms match equally, no room is chosen.
- No match: the device goes to the red list. You pick the room by hand. The whole name is kept, so you can see the typo.
- An ETS folder is used only when the folder name is itself a room of this home. Folders like
Dim,Relay,Curtainnever give a room.
Rule 3 — floor codes
- There is no fixed list of floor codes.
- Type the floor's short forms (for example
FLG,GF) in the floor's Short forms box in the Rooms step. A short form can belong to one floor only. - Generate names then removes the short forms, the floor name and the room words from the display name. The type word is kept:
FLG Living Right Blind→Right Blind. A name is never left empty.
Rule 4 — function words
ETS's address type decides first. Without it, these words decide:
- Light switch:
switch, ,toggle - Brightness:
value,level,bright,percent - Dimmer:
dim,dimming,ramp - Status / feedback:
status,state,feedback,fb - Curtain: name has
blind,shutter,curtain,jalousie,rollo- move: , ,
move - stop:
stop,halt,slat,step - position:
position,pos,height,percent
- move: , ,
A word like Status always makes a status address, even on a switch address.
Rule 5 — one device, same name
All addresses of one device must carry the same name apart from the function word. Example:
GF Living Light Chandelier On/OffGF Living Light Chandelier StatusGF Living Light Chandelier Value
These become one dimmable light Chandelier.
Air conditioners and fans
- AC words:
AC, ,HVAC,VAC,FCU,Split,Unit,Air con…(also the typoHAVC), optionally with a unit number (HVAC 2). - The words before the AC word name the room:
FL1 Guest Bed HVAC 2 Mode. - Each address goes to its place by its ETS address type: power, set point or room temperature, mode, fan.

GF Bed Light Spot (home has Guest Bed and Master Bed) |
Bed alone matches no room → red list |
What happens to names that do not fit
- No room match → red list; you assign the room. Never guessed.
- Not a light or curtain → not imported as one.
If it goes wrong
- Two lights merged into one: give them different device names.
- Wrong room: check the room words, and that no two rooms match equally.
